The Benefits of Sharing A Meal with Someone

The Benefits of Sharing A Meal with Someone

We focus a great deal on what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. But do you know that eating with someone is just as important as what you eat? In our fast-paced, hectic world, families are finding fewer moments for meals together and they are missing out on an opportunity to feed the body both physically and emotionally.

Nutrients are just as important as the act of sharing a meal with family and friends provided the sharing is a congenial and supportive one. Arguments and conflicts at the dinner table create more than digestive problems. Stress on the body incubates problems that eventually shut down the immune system and this can lead to a whole host of health issues. Having a social meal with others is beneficial if it a)is an opportunity for relaxation; b)becomes an occasion for conversation; c)enhances the sense of sharing and bonding.

There are reasons why companionship bolsters the immune system. Studies have shown that loneliness is a risk factor for poor nutrition. Single people, especially seniors who live alone, tend to skip meals or eat poorly. Studies have shown that those who score highest on the "loneliness index" tend to consume meals that are lower in calories and calcium. For up to two years after the death of a spouse, widows and widowers tend to eat significantly poorer diets.

In fact, companionship is one of the two factors that emerged most prominently in a study on longevity. Sixteen researchers from different fields studied over a thousand healthy seniors. What they identified as two outstanding features in the lifestyles of these healthy seniors are a) physical activity throughout their lives and b) maintenance of social and intellectual connectedness. In fact, these two factors were even more significant than dietary patterns.

It has long been known that a happy marriage is a recipe for health. In a study of more than 4000 seniors age 55 or older, both men and women who were living with spouses consumed a better diet than those living alone. There is no doubt that emotional bonding and meaningful connectedness have a direct influence on health. These connections are often the source of positive feelings and a sense that all is right, despite challenging circumstances. In a 15 year study of close to 700 nuns who lived and taught in the United States, researchers found that those who most often used words such as "joy" or " happy" in their letters and diaries lived as much as ten years longer than those who expressed fewer positive emotions.

Positive feelings that come from being part of a partnership or group can act as a biological shield against stress. A Dutch study of 1000 people aged 65 to 85 found that 10 years later, the optimists in the group had a 55% lower risk of death from all causes and a 23% lower risk of heart disease.

What do all these studies mean for us? It does not hurt to make meals a happy sharing time. There were years when our boys were involved with music lessons, baseball, chess clubs and tennis and we could not find time to have meals together. But we made sure that Friday nights and Sunday dinners were sacrosanct and we kept those times as family dates.

Setting aside at least one day a week for family meals can do more than feed the body. For those who live alone, consider inviting a friend or neighbor over or joining a social group that meets for dinner twice a month. Even nurturing your sense of being connected with the spiritual universe is a strong antidote against stress. The sense that we are all interconnected is part of our emotional system and needs to be fed just as much as our bodies.

The Benefits Of Keeping Ducks - Tips For Beginners

The Benefits Of Keeping Ducks - Tips For Beginners

Raising and keeping ducks is becoming popular nowadays, on par with raising chicken. Primarily raised for their meat, more than 20 million ducks are being raised in the United States every year. Though they lay fewer eggs compared to chicken, their eggs are larger and tastier, plus they contain more nutrients too. Raising ducks for business is relatively less troublesome too since ducks requires non-elaborate housing facilities. Compared to chicken, ducks need less attention and less space for rearing.

In choosing a business, why pick keeping ducks? It is because they are considered one of the most versatile of the avian species. Their bodies are strong and can keep themselves well in wide ranges of climatic and nutritional conditions. These means that raising them is inexpensive.Since they do not lay plenty of eggs, it is advised to keep the eggs for food or for hatching. Note that they actually can produce more eggs but they will have to eat more egg-laying feeds, 75 percent more compared to chicken, so it will not be economical.

Most raisers choose keeping ducks of the Pekin breed. The Pekin duck, also called the Long Island Duck, is a domesticated kind of duck, bred from the Mallard of China. They are better egg producers than other breeds and they gain weight quickly too. More than 90 percent of duck meat consumed in the US is from Pekin ducks. A 4-7 month mature Pekin duck, on the average, weighs about 9-10 pounds.

Housing for keeping ducks is also inexpensive. It can be made from light materials such as bamboo or wood. A space of about 3 to 4 square feet is advisable for every duck. As much as possible, the house should be placed in a nearby moving body of water like a stream. A pond or paddling pool may also work but regular water replacement, about once every two weeks, is advisable. Duck droppings can make the water green in no time. They need water bodies to swim and exercise. But only allow them to swim up to 2 hours so they don't get over fatigued.

Other than for business purposes, keeping ducks as pets is also a good idea. They are easy to take care of and they get rid of harmful pests in the garden. They can live up to more than ten years. In opposition to popular connotation, ducks are not always quacking. They just quack loud when they got surprised.

The Benefits of Good Nutrition

There are multiple benefits to good nutrition. Good nutrition is essential for the maintenance and health of you and your body. It is known that good nutrition can provide mental health relief, promote sleep, and increases energy. Good nutrition also provides the body with the nutrients it needs to fight of disease and germs.

Sugary food and foods that are filled with excessive amounts of fat can stymie your energy throughout the day and limit the energy you can produce. Since fats digest more slowly than other molecules, they cannot provide the body with a constant source of fuel. Sugars also promote higher blood sugar levels, which can leave a body feeling tired once the initial sugar rush is gone. Diet that limits sugar intake can leave a body feeling energized and vigorous. It is also known that excessive sugar levels forces the body to store sugar as fat, causing you to actually gain weight, instead of losing weight.

What keeps standing upright is the one thing we forget to nourish. The skeleton is necessary for our survival, and as we age can begin to deteriorate. By consuming a healthy diet, we can provide the bones the needed calcium for bone growth and maintenance. This will help us avoid painful medical conditions later in life. The skeleton is one of the most important elements to our bodies, and not caring for it can leave us crippled and paralyzed.

It is also important to avoid sugary, high fat foods because of the damage it can do the biggest muscle in our body: the heart. Research provides us the evidence that certain foods do increase the risk of heart disease and other conditions, while eating a smart, balanced diet can actually reverse the signs of aging in our heart. By avoiding unsaturated fats, the heart can keep pumping for years to come. Since all the bodys blood flows through the heart, it is best to keep that muscle as healthy as possible, so your body can receive fresh, clean blood to function.

Making the choice to eat healthier and better makes us feel better about ourselves and our bodies. The comfort good nutrition allows us to feel about our body is immeasurable. The mental benefits of good nutrition are strong reason to make the change to healthier eating. When you eat better, you feel better and it shows in your smile, your skin, your attitude. Eating a more balanced diet can actually perfect your complexion, clear up any blemishes on your skin and give you a nice, healthy glow. Sugary, high fat foods will do just the opposite.

Looking at the variety of benefits good nutrition can offer a person, you realize what a better lifestyle healthier dieting and better food choices can be. And it can begin with one meal. Anyone can enjoy the benefits almost immediately, with just one plate. So load up on the fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Enjoy the healthy life style you have just chosen. Your body will thank you for it.

The Advantages Of Dry Dog Food - Some Helpful Tips

People tend to treat their pets as family members. This can extend to feeding table scraps or sharing their food with their dogs. All veterinarians will advise against this practice. Human food is almost always inappropriate for proper health and nutrition. Canine specialists recommend a good quality dry dog food, fed in appropriate amounts. This diet has advantages over the other options available to pet owners.

Dry food is less expensive than canned food and does not contain excessive moisture. It can be left in open containers for self-feeding without fear of spoilage. Most dry offerings have crunchy texture that is satisfying for dogs' chewing behavior and can promote improved oral health. There are many options for kibble-type food and the quality range extends from cut-rate low quality brands with questionable ingredients to custom produced, high-price brands with exotic content such as duck or venison. There are even vegetarian brands that use plant-based proteins instead of meat.

The actual protein content of dog kibble varies greatly among brands. Protein makes up only part of the food with the remainder being fiber and filler. The amount and quality of fillers used to increase food volume makes a difference in both nutrition and cost of the food. Some common filler materials are: corn, peanut hulls, weeds, straw, feathers, and corncobs. These fillers have no nutritional value and can promote allergic reactions in sensitive animals. Higher quality products contain only wheat or rice - based filler and high quality fiber sources such as beet pulp. Fiber is required to promote proper stool formation.

The protein source can be one or more of many animal-based products as well as vegetable-based. Meat by-product is the common term for those animal parts not used in food for humans. This can be from chicken, beef, lamb or pork slaughterhouses. Fish packing operations provide much animal food protein and some operations provide animal protein specifically for pet food.

Regardless of the source most protein in dry food is processed or rendered into dry protein with little resemblance to the original source. In most cases this results in a healthy but cheap component for the food product. To make a food more palatable to dogs, various flavors are added or even sprayed onto the product during the final stages of manufacture. Mass-produced products targeted at the low price end of the market exercise less control over of ingredients. Small custom producers generally give the health and happiness of companion animals a higher priority.

Internet research into pet food production will leave many readers worried about their pets' wellbeing. There are government agencies that try to maintain standards for pet food contents and food container labeling. The basic quality of mid-priced to high-end food is good and healthy for animals. The super-low cost products can be of questionable quality at best. One thing pet owners can do is learn what the terms in the list of ingredients actually mean then read the labels closely before selecting a product.

Pet health experts will remind owners that frequent changes can cause digestive problems. If an animal is doing well on a certain brand of food, change just for the sake of change is not justified. It is better to stick with a selected brand of dry dog food as long as the dog is healthy and happy. The same concern applies to the treats you give your pets.

The 8515 Rule for Healthy Eating

By: Dr. Tim

Last night my wife made chocolate chip cookies. For those who dont know it, my wife makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the entire world. She only makes them to torture me. She fills the entire house with the aroma and then the cookies sit on the cooling rack saying, Eat me now. (Its true. I can hear them.) They are never satisfied. If I eat one, the others just start calling louder: Eat us too.

I love food. I love all kinds of food. The problem is that I am also very health-conscious and it turns out that not all the foods I like are healthy. I dont think I am alone. How do we justify our (sometimes uncontrollable) desire to eat something delicious that may not be good for us and at the same time remain true to ourselves in eating healthy and maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

In treating many patients in my weight-loss clinic and teaching many others to eat healthy, I have developed the 85/15 rule of eating. It goes like this. We eat to survive 85 percent of the time. We need to grab some breakfast in the morning so we can go to work. We grab a mid-morning snack around 10. We eat lunch around noon. The day continues and we eat because we need the nutrition and energy to live.

The other 15 percent of the time we eat for social reasons. We may be going out to dinner with friends or we get invited to a party. Or my wife makes cookies. We are not really eating to survive or for energy or to stay healthy. During these times we are eating because we want to, because it tastes good or because we are at a social event.

If as individuals and as a society we can learn to eat only healthy foods during the 85 percent times we would solve our obesity problem. And wed still be able to have occasional treats. If we choose items that will provide us with good nutrition and energy 85 percent of the time, then the other 15 percent of the time it wont matter what we eat.

I believe that is the secret to solving the dilemma of being a health nut and still being able to have the occasional bad thing.

My healthy eating plan consists of these building blocks:

Fruits and vegetables. Eat at least four helpings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. In addition, I try to vary the color of these items. Each color represents different nutrients. So try to have something green, yellow, red, orange and purple to get a wide variety of nutrients.

If eating four helpings of vegetables a day is difficult, which it can sometimes be, then getting a juicer will help. I am a big fan of juicing and feel so much better when I am doing it. It is hard to eat an entire bunch of raw carrots, a cucumber and an apple in one sitting but very simple if you juice the same products. Make sure you buy a quality juicer the cheaper ones just make you more frustrated.

Protein. I am also a big proponent of eating more protein and less simple carbohydrates (sugars). We need at least 1 gram of protein for each kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight. I recommend even more protein: 1 gram per pound of body weight. Do this and keep your total number of calories the same and see if you dont start losing weight, increasing lean muscle mass and losing fat. Inevitably, if my weight-loss patients quit losing it is because they do not have enough protein in their diet. Your diet should consist of at least four servings of protein a day, including meats, protein shakes, protein bars, nuts, dairy products or any other source of lean, healthy proteins.

Water. Make sure you drink enough water. I do not believe, as some others do, that you need to be constantly carrying a water bottle with you and flooding your kidneys. Our bodies have evolutionarily adapted an amazing mechanism to keep us from becoming dehydrated. It is called thirst and you should listen to it. But when you are thirsty, instead of reaching for a soft drink or some food drink some water first and then see if you still want anything else. Chances are you will not.

Vitamins. I also think you need to supplement with some type of multivitamin. They are inexpensive and easy to take. And there is ample evidence to show they can help in preventing disease. You can get these in pill form, as part of your protein drink or in a variety of other forms.

Timing. Eat six meals a day. Last week I told you to eat like a 2-year-old. They graze, eating small amounts of food throughout the day instead of in three big meals. That makes sense for adults too. It helps you keep a better balance of insulin and other hormones. And it keeps you from getting really hungry, which means you will be more likely to eat nutritious foods instead high-sugar foods.

So go ahead and splurge occasionally. You dont have to feel guilty as long as you are following a common-sense eating plan 85 percent of the time. Today I have eaten my four helpings of fruits and vegetables, I took my vitamins, Ive had my protein and I drank plenty of water. I think its time for another cookie.

The 50 Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance in Perimenopause and Menopause

You may be in your mid-life and are experiencing some of the following fifty hormone imbalance symptoms. If so, you may have hormone imbalances. Women in their late thirties and early to mid-forties begin entering what is known as peri-menopause, which turns into menopause by the late forties or early fifties. Perimenopause usually starts in a woman's 40s, but it can start in the 30s or even earlier, and it can last from four to fifteen years.

Today, many women are thinking about taking bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to offset their hormone imbalances and to simply feel better.

Menopause is clinically defined as the cessation of menstruation for 12 consecutive months. It marks the end of a woman's reproductive years, and this usually occurs naturally around the age of 52 when her ovaries stop producing estrogen, and there are no more eggs that are fertile.

Most hormone imbalance symptoms are caused primarily by the incorrect relationship between progesterone and estrogen levels in a woman's body. Two of the female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, exist in a delicate balance with variations that can have a dramatic effect on a woman's health, resulting in symptoms of hormone imbalance. The amounts of hormones that a woman's body produces monthly vary, depending on factors including ovulation, lack of ovulation, and other factors like stress, nutrition, or exercise.

Listed below are the fifty symptoms that are most often associated with perimenopause and menopause:
1 Anxiety attacks
2 Allergies
3 Brain fog
4 Breast pain or tenderness
5 Bloating
6 Body odor
7 Bone loss
8 A burning tongue
9 Chronic fatigue
10 Gum bleeding
11 Depression
12 Difficulty concentrating
13 Discomfort while having sex
14 Dizziness and disorientation
15 Dry eyes
16 Dry itchy skin
17 Emotional bouts
18 Facial hair increase
19 Face flushing
20 Fatigue
21 Fingernails brittle and dry
22 Feelings of apprehension doom and gloom
23 Forgetfulness
24 Hair loss
25 Headaches
26 Hot flashes
27 Incontinence
28 Irregular periods
29 Joint pain in the back of knees and heel pain
30 Lethargy and tiredness
31 Light headedness
32 Loss of balance
33 Loss of libido
34 Memory lapse
35 Menstrual irregularities
36 Mental confusion
37 Migraines
38 Moodiness
39 Muscle aches and pains
40 Night sweats, or nocturnal hyperhydrosis
41 Osteoporosis
42 Panic disorder
43 Rapid heart beat
44 Sleep Disorders
45 Sudden tears
46 Thinning hair
47 Tingling extremities
48 Urinary urges
49 Vaginal dryness
50 Weight gain

Perimenopause causes a woman's estrogen levels to drop, so they might begin to feel any one or more of these fifty signs of menopause. As the estrogen decreases she may have periods that come at irregular intervals, including skipping a month or several months. But the reality is that during these times, she is no longer ovulating, and cannot get pregnant. She has just enough estrogen to make a real thin lining in the uterus but not enough to peak. This is why in perimenopause causes the periods to get shorter, and a woman's breasts might also feel lumpier, and her mind gets foggy. A pounding, racing heart is the second most common complaint associated with peri-menopause. If a woman doesn't peak estrogen with regularity, then she is probably in perimenopause.

Basically the loss of this rhythm in peri-menopause actually triggers the destruction of the rest of her eggs, through the action of excessive FSH, using up the remainder of the eggs. Around this time, she begins to get hot flashes. This is how her body shuts down for good and she will enter menopause. Hot flashes are the body's reaction to a decreased supply of the hormone estrogen, which occurs naturally as women approach menopause. This entire process can take up to fifteen years. Menstrual irregularity is most common in the mid-forties as a woman approaches menopause.

The clinical diagnosis of menopause is finding in your blood work of an FSH score higher than five (5). You too can stop this destruction of old age, get rid of the symptoms of hormone imbalance and menopause and achieve feedback and shut off FSH with estrogen replacement. During the early stages of menopause, many women experience aching joints and muscles, and others get bad if not debilitating headaches, most often caused by estrogen levels dropping. Known as "menstrual migraines" these headaches can occur when estrogen levels drop during her period.

Most women who are going into menopause experience absent, short, or irregular periods caused by hormone imbalances. Your periods may even come more frequently, every 24 days instead of every 28, or they may come later than normal. You may have a light period that lasts only a few days, then the next month have a very heavy period. Your period may last a long time or a shorter amount of time. You could skip a month, or two, and then go back to normal for a couple of months, until your period ceases altogether.

During early menopause, some women have allergies, brain fog and have trouble concentrating. Most women experience some anxiety, night sweats or hot flashes. Your skin may become dry and fingernails brittle and most women experience a loss of the moisture in the lining of vaginal area which may be associated with itching and irritation. One of the most dreaded signs of getting older is dry wrinkled skin. When your estrogen levels drop, collagen production also drops, and it is the collagen that keeps our skin youthful looking.

Fatigue is second only to pain as the most common symptom. It is defined as an ongoing and persistent feeling of weakness, tiredness, and lowered energy. When your estrogen levels drop, your vaginal tissues start drying and become less elastic. Sex becomes uncomfortable and you may be more prone to infections. Sudden hair loss happens because our hair follicles need estrogen.

Sleeplessness is another common sign. If you're tossing, turning, and have insomnia, it may be because of menopause. Weight gain, especially around your middle, is yet another sign of changing hormones and your metabolism is slowing down. You may also notice bloating as well, due to periodic increases in fluid retention and abdominal distension.

A loss of sex drive or loss of libido is a problem for some women at this age. All women will experience acceleration in bone density reduction as their estrogen levels drop. All women in menopause will experience osteoporosis, the thinning and weakening of the bone and a general decrease in the bone mass and density making us more susceptible to fractures or breaks. This happens later in menopause after your estrogen levels have dropped. Estrogen is involved in the process of the bone's calcium absorption.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

You can only try to fool nature by covering the fact that you are missing eggs if you replace the hormones that they would generate in exactly the amounts and rhythm in which they would occur. This is the premise behind rhythmic, bioidentical hormone therapy. If we don't replace our hormones, we will face debilitation, or the falling off of hormones that women experience in perimenopause and finally menopause. Today's woman can stop the aging process and not experience the dreadful symptoms of hormone imbalance and menopause by taking natural, rhythmic bioidentical hormone restoration. But the hormones must be replaced exactly as they would be generated in youth - in exactly the amounts and the rhythm in which they would occur when she was younger. This is the premise behind rhythmic, bioidentical hormone therapy. It is not static dosing, but dosed in a rhythm with varying amounts of estrogen and progesterone during the month. Women using this rhythmic cycling also will get their periods again, just like when they were in their prime.

Most of the women taking rhythmic bioidentical hormone replacement therapy are raving about how good they now feel. No more sleep deprivation due to hormone-related insomnia and hot flashes. They no longer experience brain fog or depression. Their sex drives are back! Their skin looks soft supple and youthful, taking them back ten years or more in their looks. But best of all, almost all of the women taking the Wiley Protocol say that all of their symptoms of menopause are gone, and they now feel like themselves again.
